Expansion planned with funding from the Western Colorado Community Foundation
The Western Colorado Community Foundation and District 51’s Food and Nutrition Services staff celebrated the 10th season of the Lunch Lizard’s free summer meals program for children across the Grand Valley. The program added various community locations in Fruita this season.
To celebrate this milestone of partnering for 10 years to provide free meals for kids, the Western Colorado Community Foundation has raised $150,000 from generous donors to purchase a third new food truck to help the program expand in 2025.
Since the Lunch Lizard began in 2015, over 200,000 meals have been served from the trucks in neighborhoods and community locations across the Valley. The Lunch Lizard also provides meals to schools without kitchen facilities during the school year.
Fifty percent of District 51 students are eligible for free and reduced meals at school, and many do not have access to meals in the summer months when schools are closed. By providing meals during the summer, the Lunch Lizard increases access to nutritious meals for children in underserved areas.
