The mission of the Western Colorado Community Foundation is to promote charitable giving, build and manage charitable funds for community good, and provide grants, scholarships and other resources to benefit the residents and communities of western Colorado.

The Western Colorado Community Foundation is a nonprofit, public charity established by local community leaders in 1996. We serve a seven county region that includes Delta, Eagle, Garfield, Mesa, Montrose, Ouray and Rio Blanco Counties.
The Western Colorado Community Foundation started with engaged citizens, but virtually no funds. We are growing steadily and now manage over $75 million in total assets and more than 250 funds.
A number of donors have made provisions for a future gift to the Western Colorado Community Foundation through their will or estate plan. We have over 120 members of our Legacy Society; with planned gifts at an estimated value of $75 million.
In 2011, our Board of Directors undertook a visioning and strategic planning process to chart a course for our future and define a vision for 2020. Six broad organizational goals for 2020 came out of this planning process:
Promoting and supporting local philanthropy
Community foundations encourage people to “give where they live.” Already one of the largest charitable foundations in Western Colorado, our regional Community Foundation will continue to attract, build and manage donor funds and charitable legacy gifts to improve the quality of life here in western Colorado.
Excellent management and stewardship
Our Community Foundation will continue to provide excellent stewardship of the assets entrusted to us by the people of Western Colorado so that we can provide grants and scholarships, now and for generations to come.
Professional Grants and Scholarship Administration
Our Community Foundation will provide top notch grantmaking and scholarship administration services and proper due diligence, as required by the IRS and national standards for our field.
Expanded Donor Services
Our Community Foundation will support donors in becoming more thoughtful and strategic with their philanthropy through community issues forums, education and learning events, site visits/tours and other activities.
More discretionary funds
Our Community Foundation will build its discretionary Community Grants Fund to be able to respond to community needs as they evolve, providing program support and new program funding, supporting special projects and capital campaigns.
Leadership in addressing community needs
Our Community Foundation will embrace a broader leadership role in improving the quality of life in our communities: identifying issues, convening and partnering with community leaders and constituents to discuss problems and develop community-wide solutions, and providing funding.
1996 – Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in the State of Colorado
1997 – First donor-advised fund created by Harold and Ruth Moss
1999 – First end-of-life legacy gift received from the estate of Jane Quimby
2001– Community Grants Fund established with a 3-year challenge grant from the Boettcher Foundation
2002 – First scholarship fund established in memory of Lew Goodhart
2005 – First real estate gift donated
2006 – First million dollar fund established
2006 – N*STAR nonprofit training program endowed by the Bacon Family Foundation
2007 – $10 million in total assets
2008 – First affiliation partnerships established with Two Rivers Community Foundation and Rifle Community Foundation in Garfield County
2010 – $1 million annual grants and scholarships awarded
2012 – 15th anniversary celebrated with over $1.5 million annual grants and scholarships awarded and $35 million in total assets
2015 – Record breaking $2.1 million in annual grants and scholarships awarded
2016 – $50 million in total assets
2017 – 20th Anniversary celebration with over $2.5 million in annual grants and scholarships awarded and $60 million in total assets
